The inspiration for this workshop comes directly from Joe Pilates' own words. "The science of Contrology disproves that prevalent and all-too-trite saying, you are only as old as you feel. The art of Contrology proves that the only real guide to your true age lies not in years or how you THINK you feel but as you ACTUALLY are as infallibly indicated by the degree of natural and normal flexibility enjoyed by your spine throughout your life. With that in mind I have several clients 60/70+ who do not suffer from the many common ailments of their age. They have normal bone density, no arthritis (that they admit to), no chronic joint pain, no joint replacements, etc. These clients do not need to follow the same contraindication guidelines set for their age. However, they are a little tighter, stiffer and kyphotic than they were in their younger years. This does not require them to omit exercises! In fact, it inspires me to make sure that these clients move using the major themes from Return to Life including spinal flexibility, circulation, good breathing and the development of supple well balanced muscles. All ages of Pilates practitioners deserve the opportunity to complete their "varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure." In this workshop we will watch these incredible clients moving through a mat class and discuss why moving them in as many ways as possible can contribute to their continued overall health and well being. I will take into consideration their working level and show ways to prop or modify as needed to assist them through the more advanced Pilates mat exercises. After seeing these clients move you will be inspired to work confidently with clients of all ages and see the proof that the Pilates method has inherent safety measures to avoid overloading the spine and other delicate joints in EVERY human body.
